A Timeline of Ela Motors

1960

12 Land Cruisers were the first Toyota units shipped to PNG.

1961

Toyota shipped 29 units this year including the first Stout and Tiara.

1963

Ela Motors commenced operations in Port Moresby. The first year Toyota achieves No.1 market share, which is still held today.

1966

The Port Moresby showroom and service facilities opens at Badili in its current position.

1967

Toyota was the first manufacturer to ship 1,000 vehicles to PNG in one year.

1973

Papua New Guinea was granted self government.

1975

Papua New Guinea gains full independence from Australia.

1976

Hino Trucks were introduced to market which quickly became a very popular choice of truck.

1977

Ela Motors establishes an Automotive Training Centre in Port Moresby.

1980

The Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser 60 series were introduced into the PNG market. Record sales of 4,536 Toyota units was recorded.

1993

Porgera branch was opened to service the Porgera gold mine operation.

1994

The Rabaul branch was destroyed by volcano and did not reopen until 1997.

1997

The Alotau branch opens for business.

1998

The Mt Hagen branch was rebuilt and opened by the Prime Minister of the time - Mr Paias Winginti.

2000

The Kokopo branch was opened replacing the Rabaul branch.

2002

An earthquake destroys the Wewak panel shop.

2006

Major refurbishment of the Badili showroom is completed.

2007

Ela Motors introduce Yamaha 4-stroke Outboard Motor engines.

2009

The Hino 300 Series light duty truck is launched in the PNG market.

The second Port Moresby branch opens in Waigani.
